Reclaimed bricks
At BCA Antique Materials we maintain stocks of reclaimed bricks, generally hand-made, which our imaginative clients use on projects from building fireplace back walls, vaulted ceilings, walls of course, and even flooring (for example with antique quarry tiles). It’s pre-Industrial Revolution bricks that we generally source. Our clients prefer historic authenticity (with variable colours and sizes) for their projects, rather than reclaimed modern industrially produced bricks, which are also important to reclaim and re-use to reduce waste and unnecessary fuel burning. Indeed it’s an ecologically sensitive subject, it being important to reduce of the use of fossil fuels and the resulting air pollution which is a major problem in the production of new bricks.
Antique bricks
Antique brick colours vary from consignment to consignment, and to a certain extent from brick to brick : burnt reds, salmon-pink, peachy-orange, yellow or ochre, and we also stock the classic thin old clay bricks known here as “St Jean” briquettes.
Our centuries-old bricks in smaller sizes are often described by our British clients as “Tudors”, proof that they integrate well into other countries’ vernacular architecture. The antique red bricks are being chosen again by designers wanting warmer colours on projects, bringing more charm compared to the rather grey and minimalist austerity of recent years.
