Austere Louis XVI fireplace

Austere Louis XVI fireplace: This antique French limestone has an austere massive appearance despite the lintel being decorated with sculpted motifs. The lintel has a pair of opposing central scrolls that are reminiscent of gun limbers, flanked by a rosette at each end. However the jambs could not be more simple, made up of robust blocks of limestone devoid of decor. The mantel shelf has a 1/2 round moulding along the front and side returns.
The overall result is sturdy and restrained, perhaps originating from a late 18th century or early 19th century military building.
