Reclaimed chevron flooring

French chevron parquet floors are close in scale to herringbone floors, with the striking difference being that the pieces are fitted at an angle to one another, rather than at 90°. Traditionally the angle would be chosen to suit the esthetic of the room, with the ends from 45° (meaning each piece is at 90° to its neighbour) to 60° (at 120°). This gives a decorative geometrical aspect to the floor that has been chosen by generations of chateaux owners and their architects over many centuries. Whilst chevron flooring is authentic for French properties it has also been chosen for parquet floors in countries across Europe and further afield where European floor patterns were adopted too. After all, the name for chevron parquet in French is Pointe de Hongrie, which is the perfect indication that it is not exclusive to France ! Early references for French chevron parquet are the floors of France’s royal palaces and chateaux, then post French Revolution properties, then later in 19th century Parisian « Haussmann » era mansions and apartments.

French chevron sizes

Historically French chevron parquet is most frequently made up of fairly slender pieces of oak, which can be seen on the various stock references in this section. Nowadays there may be different size preferences which to a certain extent we can adapt to. Bespoke size requests need to be quoted for. They may or may not correspond to the more typical sizes we have in stock, but please consult with us so we can assess feasibility and costs. Our advice is that you try to re-use the sizes indicated on our for rapidity of supply and economy.

Chevron parquet timber options

The French oak parquet that we reclaim was nailed down, not adhered using toxic bitumen as was common in eg post Industrial Revolution Great Britain. The most requested timber is of course BCA’s TRULY RECLAIMED antique oak, but we also have requests for other timbers such as pine. We also stock new « antiqued » solid oak chevron flooring, chosen for projects where lower budgets are required and when thinner boards are preferred. Engineered parquet floor options are available too.

BCA’s truly reclaimed antique chevron parquet has unique features that are difficult (if not impossible) to replicate in new wood. Our reclaimed antique parquet is frequently specified for authentic historic projects, but also for high-end contemporary interiors in homes and commercial premises such as hotels and restaurants.

BCA’s parquet and floorboards, and more recently salvaged boarding such as reclaimed oak derived from reclaimed « wagon boards », are specifically chosen by home owners and professionals for entirely justified ecological reasons. Don’t cut down more trees when reclaimed parquet is available ! In addition, old wood is « slow growth » and thereby denser and closer grained than recent « fast growth » commercially forested trees. Appropriately installed and carefully maintained, reclaimed wood flooring can last for a few centuries more !

However that authentic top face patina may or may not be what is sought after for the project, which means that some of our references are re-milled. A distinct advantage is that beautiful old wood has more character and natural colour variation than new wood, so they are top choices for high-end projects where the quality of natural material choices is paramount. However when the original upper surface patina is retained we generally include surface brushing to a lesser or greater degree, as appropriate.

We can also re-calibrate damaged or difficult to re-lay consignments, de-nailing then re-milling edges and tongues & grooves, calibrating the undersides to a regular thickness. Re-calibration such as this enables faster and easier installation, and permits a lower skill level for installers who nowadays are accustomed only to industrial flooring. However this all carries a cost, logically making reclaimed parquet ready to re-lay higher priced than industrial mass-produced engineered wood flooring or synthetic bad copies of the real thing.

In oak and pine (but occasionally in elm, walnut, chestnut etc), our reclaimed antique chevron parquet can receive finishes such as brushed, oiled, waxed or varnished (or nothing at all). BCA’s reclaimed and new parquet floors are appreciated across Europe and around the world for their authenticity and style, permitting home owners, interior designers and architects to transform rooms with authenticity, patina and style.
