Antique hunters & wolf fireback: This antique cast-iron fireback is of high quality, and displays the cautionary tale of the hunters hunted, and caught, by a big wolf. Would trembling children centuries ago have been told « qui a peur du grand méchant loup » (who’s afraid of the big bad wolf) looking at this fireback through the flames of a log fire?

In the foreground we see a hunter, his bow & quiver knocked to the ground, being attacked by a wolf. His hunter comrade has climbed a tree to escape. They are flanked by two Ionic Order columns giving a Classic Greek or Roman context to the unfortunate scene, as does their clothing.
