Antique fireback with scene from mythology : This fireback features intricate and heavily charged mouldings depicting a scene from Mythology. A prostrate naked man lying on an oval woven mat by an open fire is being perhaps resurrected by the second figure standing upright alongside, holding a sheaf of corn in either hand seemingly anointing him from water in an oval tub. Could this be « The Rude Awakening » following a good night out (we’ve all been there ….) ? Historians of Mythology more knowledgable than we are may wish to enlighten us with the full story !
