Antique French fireback dated 1710 : This stunning 18th-century French fire-back is in cast iron. Particularly large, it is dated 1710.
Pelicans, allegorical symbols of Christ in Christian symbolism, are prominently featured. According to a fable, a pelican opened its chest with its beak to feed its young with its own blood, drawing a parallel to Christ, both perceived as martyrs.
The inscription “IHS” in the center stands for “Iesus Hominum Salvatore,” translating to “Jesus Savior of Humanity.” The terms “CHARITAS” (charity in Latin) and “LABOVREE” are also inscribed.
