Antique terracotta decorative squares
Antique terracotta decorative squares: These extraordinary Truly Reclaimed terracotta square tiles each feature a Medallion at their center. Hand-made these tiles display meticulous attention to detail. With their varied warm colours, ranging from orange-red to +/- dark grey, they are typical of traditional terracotta that was fired in wood-burning kilns. Each tile has an authentic and unique character.
The medallions adorning these tiles are highly unusual and of great interest. Their origin and purpose is intriguing, but perhaps they depict a king and queen? They represent two different scenes, finely inlaid in the center of each of the tiles. One of them shows a medieval knight with his shield, proudly mounted on his horse whilst brandishing a sword. The other depicts a woman dressed in a long robe holding a bag (or a shield?) with a bird (eagle?) in the center, all surrounded by floral motifs.
