Antique check floor in slate and limestone

Antique check floor in slate and limestone: This traditional French antique reclaimed check stone tiling in slate and limestone was installed in a 19th century chateau near BCA’s Maine & Loire base. This « black & white » check reclaimed stone flooring is in hard Bourgogne-type limestone for the « whites », with slate for the « blacks », featuring a worn authentic patina gained over many years. In later years the chateau became a monastery, and these stone floors will have been scrubbed well. Although this job lot is late 19th century, these medium sized square stone tiles correspond to a previous era of Classic black & white limestone with black slate or marble squares which were frequently chosen for the floors in French chateaux and manor houses, public buildings and churches.

This antique floor (and the matching same stone floors below) has provenance from the French chateau in the Mayenne region nearby built in 1895 by a French industrialist in Scottish « Gothic Revival » style.

We have a total of 73.5 m² (785,76 sq ft), with 64 m² (688,89 sq ft) of checkerboard and 9.5 m² (96,87 sq ft) of slate tiles (in addition to the checkerboard).
