Statue of Neptune on Sea Horse
Statue of Neptune on Sea Horse: This antique limestone statue depicts Neptune (or Poseidon) as a cherub riding a sea horse emerging from the waves. This is a charming antique statue of an allegorical Neptune, the God of the sea often associated with sea-horses (hippocampus) rather than horses. Neptune is the God of the Sea in Roman mytholgy, or Poseidon in Greek mythology which pre-dates the Romans.
This late 19th century sculpture will find its place in a Classical garden or park, or a historic interior. The quality of the sculpted limestone is high, and well preserved with some weathering. The statue is sold with the separate antique stone plinth. Together they form a Classic ensemble.
